A teacher who made a difference
By Manila Williams
Since it is teacher's week at Qassia, I thought of a teacher who we all really liked and she made a big difference to not just mine but many of her student's lives. Her name was Mrs Lucy Kurian. This is going back many years. I was in the IX Standard and the four different sections of classes had been re shuffled, so all the students get to know each other better. So here I was with a new bunch of students as my class mates. At the initial stage, there was a lot of commotion as all of us had trouble getting along. The classroom was always a chaos in absence of a teacher. Miraculously our class teacher managed to bring us all together as one. I still remember how we were all united as one in just a couple of months. We all started taking care of each other and in no time became friends. I am talking about a good 45 students in a class. Mrs Kurian had a very pleasant personality. She used to teach us biology. She also was a wonderful singer. In the extra curricular activities, she used to take practice sessions, preparing us for various inter school singing competitions. Then we all were promoted to the Xth Standard and had to appear for our board exams. My my! she was so supportive. Took great pains in maintaining a healthy balance between studies and interesting conversations. Once we all said we were in no mood to study. She agreed and started talking and before we even realized, we were discussing a biology lesson. How did she do that? Lastly, I will never forget that before our final exams, she gave each one of us, a bookmark, behind which she had written, something so beautiful that I remember it to this day. It read 'If you have some work to do, do this very hour. You supply the willingness and God supplies the power'. How beautiful, inspiring and so true. There are such teachers who we always remember and hold them close to our hearts. They not only teach us from the syllabus but also educate us in the real sense, by making us a better person. Thank you Mrs Lucy Kurian. |
